One of Japan's three Fudoson statues
Yokoyama Fudoson, located in Tsuyama-cho, Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture, is a Soto sect temple said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai. It is enshrined here as a wooden seated statue of Fudo Myoo, which is counted as one of Japan's top three Fudo statues and is a nationally designated important cultural property.
It is said to have been built in 1156 (the first year of Hogen) and is an ancient temple with a history of over 800 years. Since ancient times, this shrine has been believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck, and many people come to worship here.
- Wooden Seated Statue of Fudo Myoo, Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property: The approximately 5 meter tall wooden Seated Statue of Fudo Myoo is said to have been created by Kobo Daishi. Its powerful appearance overwhelms those who see it.
- Fudodo Hall: Fudo Hall, which houses the seated statue of Fudo Myoo, has an impressive vermilion painted exterior. There are many other Buddha statues enshrined inside the hall.
- Oku-no-in Temple: There is Oku-no-in Temple at the back up the mountain path from Fudo-do. From Okunoin you can see the surrounding mountains.
- **Yokoyama dace**: There is a pond in the precincts of Fudoson, where a Japanese dace, which is designated as a natural monument, lives.
- Train: Approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes by bus from JR Ishinomaki Station
- Car: Approximately 40 minutes from Ishinomaki Port IC
