Art nestled in nature
White Deer is a 6 meter tall white deer sculpture created by contemporary sculptor Kohei Nawa. It is located at "White Shell Beach" in the Ogihama area of Oshika Peninsula, Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture.
It was installed as part of the art event "Reborn-Art Festival" held in 2017. The Oshika Peninsula was an area that was severely damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and White Deer was created as a piece of work that expresses hopes and wishes for recovery.
The motif is the deer, which has been worshiped as a sacred animal since ancient times, and is expressed using modern shapes and materials.
Standing against the backdrop of the majestic Pacific Ocean, White Deer has an overwhelming presence.
There is a restaurant building next to the artwork, which is open during the summer art festival. Enjoy exquisite cuisine made with local ingredients (reservation required)
