Kashi-pan (Sweet bread) generally refers to bread filled with fillings such as sweet cream, fruit, red bean paste, and chocolate, and is eaten as a light meal or snack.These breads are a little different from bakery breads. It refers to products made in factories and is widely sold in supermarkets and convenience stores in Japan.
Japan's unique sweet breads include the following:
- Melon bread (メロンパン): This bread has a melon-like pattern on top of the cookie dough, and is characterized by its sweet texture.
- Anpan (あんぱん): Bread filled with red bean paste (sweet bean paste)
- Cream bread (クリームパン): bread with custard cream
- Bean bread (豆パン): The dough is stuffed with sweet kidney beans and margarine is sandwiched between them.
Souzai Pan (Deli bread) refers to bread that can be eaten as a meal and has ingredients such as vegetables, meat, and fish. Typical ingredients include ham, sausage, cheese, stir-fried vegetables, and fried noodles. It is popular as a snack or lunch and is widely sold in Japanese bakeries and convenience stores.
- Curry bread (カレーパン): Fried bread stuffed with curry. Nowadays, there are healthier types that are not fried.
- Yakisoba bread (焼きそばパン): Yakisoba sandwiched between coppépan. (Koppepan is an oval bread similar to a hot dog bun.) Similarly, there are also koppepans with spaghetti seasoned with tomato ketchup and croquettes between them.
- Egg sandwich (たまごサンド): A sandwich with a filling made of eggs and mayonnaise sandwiched between white bread. There are also some that are sandwiched between coppépans.
